In the island town of St. John’s, a little girl named Elaine loved to watch the sea.
Every morning, she’d sit by the window and tell stories to the waves.

She didn’t have fancy toys — just a small notebook and a stubby pencil.
But inside that notebook, entire worlds lived.
She wrote about her garden, her friends, and even the big mango tree that gave her shade.

One day, a teacher saw her writing and said,

"Your words have wings, Elaine. Let them fly!"

So she wrote and wrote — about her island, her mother, her dreams.
Her stories grew so powerful that they reached far across the ocean.
People in distant places read her words and said,

"Now we know what Antigua feels like."

That little girl grew up to be Jamaica Kincaid —
one of the world’s most loved Caribbean writers.

And she still reminds every child:

"Your story matters. Write it, share it, let it fly."
